Economist Summer Internship Edinburgh or London £Competitive
Are you interested in learning how we apply economics to regulate the UK communications sectors? Our eight week summer internship programme is aimed at economics students interested in gaining first-hand insight into the work of an applied economist. Successful candidates will contribute rigorous economic analysis to help inform real decision making on live projects. Doing so, they will work in multi-disciplinary teams alongside experienced economists, lawyers and policy makers, and be expected to display the Ofcom values; excellence, collaboration, agility and empowerment. Prior to joining the scheme, interns are given the opportunity to express their personal development interests. Projects are allocated to interns based on these interests and their skill sets so that they get the most out of the programme. Previous interns have worked across the breadth of industries regulated by Ofcom. This has seen interns conduct econometric analysis to investigate the potential impact of mobile mergers on quality outcomes, contribute to the economic thinking and analysis in market reviews which are central to regulating core UK internet infrastructure, and assist in the auction design of the UK 4G and 5G spectrum auctions. As Ofcom prepares for the potential regulation of online markets, there may be opportunities for interns to work on new economic issues. For example, last year one of our interns used frontier data analytics techniques such as network analysis and machine learning to study the nature and impact of online disinformation (fake news). During the scheme, interns are invited to attend a series of seminars and training. Internal seminars are organised which give insight into the economic analysis conducted across the range of sectors we regulate. Interns will also be able to attend a series of lectures delivered by external speakers from academia and industry which focus on specific current economic questions of interest. Interns further participate in economics training courses covering a wide range of regulatory economics topics. Successful interns could be offered a place on our economist graduate programme at the end of the summer. We look for technical competence and passion for competition and regulation economics as well as an ability to display the Ofcom values. How the scheme works Successful applicants will work in either our London or Edinburgh offices for eight weeks during July and August 2020. We ask that candidates identify an office preference when applying. Interns in both the London and Edinburgh offices will be paid a salary equivalent to the level of the London Living Wage.
At a minimum, applicants must be in the penultimate or final year of undergraduate or postgraduate studies and on track to gain a 2.1 degree, or equivalent. At least 50% of the course content must be sat in economics.
To apply, please select the button shown to submit your CV and a one-page cover letter. The cover letter should detail:
- What economic skills you bring to this internship that make you a suited candidate, and - Demonstrate an appreciation of the Ofcom values and an understanding of how we work. On successful review of your online application, you will be invited to take part in a face-to-face interview. Independent of office preference for the internship, candidates will be able to state whether they would like this to take place at our London or Edinburgh office. Our recruitment team will be on hand throughout the process to answer any questions you may have via the online application portal.
